If you are a history buff or would like your students to do some primary document research check out these amazing microfilm scans of the Dickinson County census from 1920 and 1930 and Iron County from 1910 and 1930. These censuses contain names, location of birth, occupations, and more. It would be a great project for students to explore what their local community was like almost one hundred years ago!
Note, I embedded both censuses below, but you can click on the link within the control area to view it in a larger window. Dickinson CountyIron CountyEducators and parents of the world rejoice, because YouTube Kids is here! YouTube Kids simplifies the YouTube experience and only allows students and children to access videos that are part of YouTube for Edu. So no longer will a scantily clad Katy Perry appear in your list of suggested videos or the weird videos of some guy opening up Kinder Surprise eggs, which my children are obsessed with. This app also features a built in timer that you can activate. This handy little feature can be great when used in conjunction with classroom stations. Of course, you could just use Guided Access, but it is always nice to have multiple options. Also, for you Android users out there, there is also a YouTube Kids for you! It is not to often I find a website that makes me say "Holy Smokes! This is AMAZING!" Yet, I found myself saying that very something when I came across Front Row. This great free resource, that's right, free, is a must for any math educator out there. Front Row provides Common Core aligned math practice for grades K-8 on Chromebooks, Windows or Mac machines, and even iPads! It even cranks it up a 1,000 notches by also creating individualized worksheets for each student to take home and practice on. Did you read that, INDIVIDUALIZED WORKSHEETS! If you just didn't say, "Holy Smokes! That is AMAZING!" please visit a teacher near by and have them take your pulse because you may be dead. Now, you may be thinking at this point, "yes, this is cool and all, but I teach sophomores (insert collegiate educator sarcastic cough)." Well, there is no reason upper level students couldn't take these tests. I took several and found my skills several tested at times. Older students could definately use this as a refresher or as a way to shore up their lacking skills. This Tool of the Week is one you definitely need to try out. It is super easy to setup and get students working on right away. So stop reading this and go to www.frontrowed.com! Storybird is one of those little web gems you often hear about, but never actually tried. Storybird allows students to use predetermined images to create a poem, picture book, or even multi-chapter book. When a student creates aStorybird they have given certain pictures to choose from. Once they do, it is their job to create a story based off of those images. This can be pretty tricky and challenging for a student, or even a educator. The short story I created above was truly a labor of love. The end result though is pretty neat. Students can see their creations online and share them with fellow classmates via a URL. These stories could even be embedded in a website like I did above. So if you are a teacher looking to get students into more creative writing, be sure to give Storybird a try! Watch the video below for some step by step instructions on how to create your own account and story According to Dictionary.com Word Clouds can be defined as, "a visual representation of user-generated electronic tags or keywords that classify and describe online content, typically an alphabetical list or a grouping of words in different font sizes, as to show relative frequency or provide links to further information." Personally I define Word Clouds as, AWESOME! Word Clouds can be a great way to introduce new ideas, stories, themes, and more to students. Word Clouds can also be a way for students to show their understanding of a story, idea, speech, or other classroom material. Using Word Clouds can take a boring paragraph and make it into a amazing and sometimes interactive picture. Below you can see several example of Word Cloud resources. These Word Clouds were created using the opening paragraphs of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien. Please note, before assigning students the task of creating a Word Cloud, always double check the website you want to use will work on a student's machine. For example, Tagxedo.com requires Silverlight to be installed, therefore it is a no go on iPads or Chromebooks. But, ABCya.com's Word Clouds has a iPad App! Have you ever seen a awesome news story and wish you could quickly share it with students? Or maybe you found a article that would benefit your kids, but it is at a Harvard reading level? Well, Newsela is here to fix both your problems! Newsela allows teachers to create classes to which they can assign news articles from there website. It also allows a teacher to select the lexile that would benefit their students the most. Both the student and teacher accounts are easy to create and administer. Below you can find a brief tutorial and introduction to this outstanding resource called, Newsela! Welcome to the first edition of "Tool of the Week!" In this edition we take a look at SMART Exchange and SMART Notebook Express. SMART Exchange is a great place to find pre-made SMART Notebook files and interactives. SMART Notebook Express allows you to open SMART Notebook files without actually having the SMART Notebook program! You can also use SMART Notebook Express to turn your computer into a semi-interactive device. View the the video tutorial here: SMART Exchange & Express |
